Magnolia Sunset Market

Magnolia Sunset Market

This week (April 19th) I started a new mural for Foot Print Farms located in Jackson, Mississippi. The farm sits on 68 acres of land and is a hidden oasis within the city. I literally grew up in a neighborhood 15 mins away and didn’t know this beautiful place existed. Each month the farm hosts an event called Magnolia Sunset Market where they invite artisans, growers, crafters, and restaurants to share and sale their products and produce. I was asked to created a 8x8 ft mural that depicts what the market means to me. After creating some sketches and talking through ideas with the organizers, I began the mural in earnest.

The first day was spent priming the wooden surface and sketching the idea. The second day was laying the first layers of paint and making corrections to the previously sketched area and adding trees. The third day was mostly focused on adding more depth and volume to the trees. I also placed some of the people from the planning stage. After taking a day off to prepare for my cousin’s upcoming wedding, I spent Saturday live painting the lower half of the mural, answering questions about painting, taking suggestions for what to include in the piece, and catching up with friends I haven’t since “The Before Times” (how I refer to days and years before 2020). The event was amazing and felt like a family reunion.

I plan to add more to this piece the week of the next event (May 15th) and finish it the day of the event. In progress update will be given on my IG story.
