Blessed to be a blessing

Sometimes, the intention to be a blessing to others is enough to open the gate of blessings from others.

Let me explain.

Last night before going to bed I decided that on my commute to work I would give a dollar to the homeless people that I would see everyday. I'm in the car, coming up to the light where they are usually stationed, wallet in hand...and they were nowhere to be found. After a sigh, I move on with my day. Taught students for a bit, had lunch, then last class of the first section before returning later in the day.

In the break between coming and going to the next section of classes, I decided to go to Books A Million because they are having a store closing sale. I got sidetracked, or more so led to go to the Goodwill next door instead.

I walk around for a bit then find this strangely interesting piece of wall art made of reclaimed wood, plastic, a wallpaper like print, and screws. It was only a few dollars so I decided to buy it. When I go up to the register there was an older than me Black guy in line.

He looks at me and the item in my hand. After a moment he says, "Can I see that?".

Nervously, I hand it over to him and he gives it to the cashier to scan it. I felt myself beginning to get angry. "Did this man just steal the item I was about to buy literally right out of my hands?!" I thought to myself.

Before I could form the words to retaliate against him, he passes it back to me and says "Have a nice day sir."

Shocked, I sigh in relief, laugh to and at myself, then thank him for gifting me this item.

The moral?

Sometimes (most times really) you never know how the people around you are going to be a blessing in your life. I'll probably never see that man again but I'll always remember his kindness towards me.

So, how are you going to be a blessing towards another today?

Talk to you again soon,

-Justin
